CALL FOR PAPERS AND POSTERS

THE SECOND

INTERNATIONAL TIPIṬAKA CONFERENCE

 “The Transmission of Buddhavacana:
From the Time of the Buddha to the Present Day”

Venue:  Tallinn, Estonia
Date:  March 25 – 27th, 2016

Buddhavacana is a European organization, which has following main objectives:
  • to introduce the authentic teaching of the Buddha to Estonia;
  • to introduce the Pali language to Estonia and throughout Europe;
  • to translate and publish the Pali Tipiṭaka into Estonian;
  • to prepare and issue the Estonian-Pali-Estonian dictionary;
  • to establish an international interactive Tipiṭaka database;
  • to develop a multi-lingual dictionary of Pali language;
  • to provide study groups, lectures, meditation courses, trips and other events.
  • to exchange information and cooperate with similar organizations.

NGO Buddhavacana was originally established in Estonia by lecturers and students of Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University. To achieve the above goals, we have established an expanded cooperation with different European and Asian universities. As our goal is to create a compact database that contains both - a Pali language dictionary in all languages, as well as complete Canonical translations - we would like to expand our network and establish a cooperation with all individuals and organizations who are ready to contribute to this vast and noble venture.

The 1st International Tipiṭaka Conference “Tipiṭaka in Native Language” took place in August 30, 2014 and was held in Tallinn, at Tallink City Hotel. The main guest was Dr. Venerable Piyaratana Walmoruwe from Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University.

The conference achieved all objectives, namely:
  • launching the Tipiṭaka translation project
  • informing the people about this project
  • involving all interested people

The 2nd International Tipiṭaka Conference “The Transmission of Buddhavacana: From the Time of the Buddha to the Present Day” will be held in Tallinn from the 25 – 27th March, 2016 and is organized by the Buddhavacana. The aim of this conference is to bring together scholars from both Asia and Europe as well as outside countires in order to present and discuss various aspects of Buddhism, namely: the Tipiṭaka, the Pali language, and their related history.

The conference will last three days in total. On the first day, there will be performances and presentations. The second and third day will focus on meditation practice.

The organizers invite individual papers for presentation and posters from various fields of Buddhist studies based on original research from an academic approch on specific subjects. Note: the posters and speakers must be at least BA holders (MA students and PhD candidates).

Topics for Papers to be Presented:
  • From the birth of the Buddha to the birth of the Tipiṭaka
  • Buddhist sects – origin, evolution and modification
  • The Pāli language – language of the Buddha
  • Vinayapiṭaka
  • Suttapiṭaka
  • Abhidammapiṭaka

Topics for Posters to be Presented:
  • Tipiṭaka studies
  • Buddhist studies
  • Pāli studies
  • History of Buddhist studies
  • History of Pali canon
  • Linguistics and language studies
  • Literature and translation studies
  • Buddhism and modern society
  • Religion and philosophy
  • Panel submissions

Regarding Submission for Papers

We are calling for individual papers to be presented by speakers. The deadline for submission of the papers is the 20th February, 2016. Submissions should take the form of abstracts of no more than 300 words and sent to the Conference Board via email (andrus.kahn@gmail.com). The papers must meet predetermined topics. A total of six papers will be selected on the above subjects. If the Board chooses a paper to be presented, the author is kindly welcome to perform it a the conference as one of the keynote speaker. Authors will receive feedback via email by the 25th February, 2016.
Please find the Abstract Submission Form for Individual Papers in Appendix 1 of this letter.

Regarding Presentation for Posters by Students

MA students and PhD candidates are called to submit posters to be presented in the form of large-format (A1) posters. This offers an opportunity for students to discuss their work and research with an academic audience in an informal way and thus obtain experience by performing in a high level academic event.

Organizers of the conference are awaiting the submission of posters to be presented in the form of abstracts of no more than 200 words by the 20th February 2016. Submissions should be sent to Ven. Ṭhitañāṇo Bhikkhu via email (andrus.kahn@gmail.com). Feedback with more detailed information on the preparation of posters will be given by the 25th February, 2016.

All the scholars, academics and lecturers are kindly asked to attend this conference as well as encourage their students to participate in the poster session. A helpful overview about designing posters can be found at:
